6 Cigar Humidification Methods

Now that you have a good comprehension of what a hygrometer does and what can occur if your humidity is too high or too low, let's discuss how to actually control the humidity in your humidor. Unfortunately, you can not just use a moist paper towel in a ziplock bag...

1. The Hockey Puck Humidification Method
The unofficial hockey puck system was my first way to control the humidity in my humidor and boy was it stressful. This is the"puck" which is included with humidors the majority of the time and needs you to soak it into propylene glycol. I discovered it for a bit of a guessing game because you need to make sure that your"puck" does not run out of juice. It was mainly stressful since I used the free version in my humidor so results may vary. I found that I had to soak the puck every 15 days or so with a humidor of 30 cigars. But after I updated to some Xikar puck, it was smooth sailing. I only had to re-soak every 30-45 days and found it to be much more consistent. Soaking a humidor puck is very easy. It takes approximately 30 minutes and you simply buy the propylene glycol separately. This solution is odorless and just replaces water as a pure form of moisture. Using tap water may cause problems due to chlorine or other substances, and bottled water will not stay moist as long as propylene glycol.

2. The Tubes or Mini Jars Cigar Humidification Method
Xikar and Drymistat make quite easy to use products which you may just open and pop it in a humidor such as this
wineador. These include a much more controlled method of handling humidity than the puck method. The only bad thing is that you have to replace these entirely the majority of the time each 3-6 months completely. I don't recommend attempting to"re-soak" them together with the propylene glycol. The beauty of these, especially the tubes is that they don't take up much room in your humidor. However, depending on how big the jar format will work better:

3. The Boveda Packs Cigar Humidification Method
Similar to the jar or tubes from Xikar and Drymistat, you can go with a very controlled method of Boveda humidity packs. These are my favorite cigar humidification strategy and ones that I utilize for my tupperdor today. But they could err a bit on the large side in terms of humidity should you use them in a tupperdor. I would like to go several percentages lower in the preferred humidity for a consequence if you've got a tupperdor. (These packs are available in all different humidity levels.) Otherwise they do a fantastic job of consuming humidity if it's too high and increasing if it's too low. Once your package is stiff, you then simply throw it off. That being said, many claim to be able to recharge these quite easily simply by soaking them for a few days after they become stiff. Even though this might be a terrific way to save money, the recharged packs certainly won't be as precise as an original. To discover more about how to recharge, check out this YouTube tutorial. For me personally, I really don't recharge because I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars on cigars, I do not wish to cut any corners to save a couple bucks on Boveda packs.

4. The Heartfelt Beads Humidification Method
Heartfelt beads are a frequent humidity method which many recommend across cigar forums. This provider revolves around these beads and they've a lot of diehard followers to their merchandise. These are popular with larger humidors or wineadors. These are probably one of the more expensive options but last forever. They do need spraying of water following week or two though so you have to abide by a schedule. This way is a bit more geared towards the more advanced cigar collectors. Typically, cigar collectors will have a pouch of these a coating at the base of the wineador.

5. The Electric Cigar Humidification Method
There's nothing greater than the place it and overlook a electric humidifier, especially in the event that you have a large or valuable collection. These are a bit expensive compared to the other choices such as cigar humidor but there's the benefit of very little maintenance. The components work great if plugged in -- so you will be asked to conduct a flat cable into the exterior of your humidor. However a few of these units have some really cool features like wi-fi capacities and can humidify around 1,000 cigars! (That would be a good deal of Boveda packs...) You really do have to replace the cartridge every 6 -- 12 months but it's relatively cheap.

6. The Kitty Litter Cigar Humidification Method
To get a larger wineador setup, many recommend kitty litter as a viable choice to control humidity. I've personally never done this but many swear by it. This is a really similar technique to the Heartfelt beads strategy outlined above. The key is to get a kitty litter with no odor and spray on distilled water every two to three weeks as required. I've seen very positive testimonials out of Exquisicat Crystals with very low fructose nor scent.
